Painting is the ultimate DIY home improvement. The tools are cheap, the technique is learnable, and a mistake is just another coat of paint. Tip: Invest in quality tape, a good roller, and don't skip the primer. Your local Dunn-Edwards (an Arizona favorite) can color-match anything.

Replacing Hardware

Cabinet knobs, drawer pulls, door handles, towel bars—these are all straightforward swap-outs requiring a screwdriver and 10 minutes per piece. You can dramatically modernize a kitchen or bathroom in an afternoon for under $200 in hardware.

Swapping Light Switch and Outlet Covers

Covers only—not the switches or outlets themselves. Old almond-colored switch plates can be replaced with white or decorator-style plates in minutes with nothing but a flathead screwdriver.

Plumbing Behind Walls

Drywall Texture Matching

You can patch a small nail hole. But making a drywall repair invisible in a textured wall (knockdown, orange peel, etc.) requires specialized tools, the right mud consistency, and genuine practice. Bad texture matching is one of the most visible DIY fails.

Roof Work
